Torres de Serranos, Valencia, Spain

The towers of Serranos, imposing gate of the late medieval walls were built by master Pere Balaguer between 1392 and 1398. It seems that the model of inspiration was the Royal Poblet monastery door, but Valencia has larger dimensions, which give it an appearance of giant triumphal arch. The inner façade has large openings in arched conceived as grandstands at different heights where the leading families of the city stood to follow the popular celebrations and the entrance of famous people who came to her. The Torres de Serranos became prison for nobles and knights from 1586, maintained this role until 1887. The monument has been declared of historical and artistic interest. Visit Spain.
