Rhône Glacier, Oberwald, Switzerland

The Rhone glacier is one of the Alps’ most beautiful glaciers. It rises at the northern side of Mt Dammastock, into which it has digged a deep and wide furrow. If you travel from the Valais into the Gotthard region via the Furka pass, you drive in narrow bends close past the glacier. To contemplate the beautiful glacier world in all peace and quiet, the panorama stops along the road are recommended to car-drivers. A walk from Gletsch to the foot of the glacier, where the Rhone rises as a little rivulet, is also worthwhile.

The contact with the glacier becomes even more intensive with a visit to the 100 metre long ice cave that allows you to take a look at the inside of the Rhone glacier. The enchanting ice spectacle with all its splendid forms and colours can be experienced close up in Belvedere on top of the Furka pass. The ice cave is open from 8am – 7pm, provided that the pass road is open. The Rhône Glacier is a glacier in the Swiss Alps and the source of the river Rhône and one of the primary contributors to Lake Geneva in the far eastern end of the Swiss canton of Valais.
