Monasterio de Santo Toribio de Liébana, Cantabria, Spain
Monasterio in the Romanesque style, perhaps Asturian or Moorish style. During the tenth and eleventh centuries there had been a great expansion of the monastery through the valleys of Liebana. In 1256, the present church was built with the financial support of the faithful, through indulgences granted for this purpose by the palentino Bishop Fernando. The temple follows the guidelines of Gothic Cistercian monastic influence, with the clarity of lines and spaces and the decorative sobriety that characterizes the architecture of the Order of San Bernardo. It has a three polygonal apses header and a body of three naves of similar height. All vaults are ribbed and some carry reinforcing ribs.Visit Spain. Epic Spain Route © Monika Newbound
