Horse Fair in Jerez | May 2018
In the first weeks of May, Jerez de la Frontera gets ready to host the Horse Fair, one of the most outstanding of its kind in Spain. Examples from all corners of the country and all breeds are brought to the city to be valued and watched. The animals parade through the main streets of the town, their magnificence mixing with the Flamenco singing, fine wine and traditional regional dress. Don’t miss this chance to enjoy the beauty of one of Spain’s most symbolic animals at this incredibly beautiful festival.
Jerez celebrates the Horse Fair from 13 to 20 May 2017. Declared of International Tourist Interest is, together with Easter, the most important festival in Jerez de la Frontera (Cadiz). Considered the best fair in the world, it is totally public and its people overflow joy, sympathy and humor in abundance.
The exhibition center is located in González Hontoria Park, on Álvaro Domecq Avenue. The festivities officially begin with the lighting, at 10 o’clock in the evening, it is advisable not to miss that moment for its spectacularity.
It is customary to wear short dress, if mounted on horseback, dress of gypsy for women and half of label at night. Typical of drinks Feria de Jerez are odorous and fine wine. But the most requested is the “rebujito”, a mixture of fine wine and lime soda. The food is very varied, but focusing on the fried fish and typical stews, such as the bull’s tail, spaghetti tagarninas, el menudo, sherry and of course the best seafood and chacinas.
Unlike most fairs, which maintain a uniform design of all their huts, the Horse Fair allows each hut to have a different design. What’s more, the city council holds several competitions of booths in each edition: best company booth, improvement booth association and best corner booth.
Access to the Exhibition Center is free and access to most of the booths is also free. Unlike the April Fair percentage of private houses it is minimal. Anyone can enjoy the atmosphere in any of the booths, which belong to bars, organizations or sororities.
It is customary on Monday is reserved as a day of retired and discounts on attractions are made for older people to take their grandchildren to them. In addition, Wednesday is reserved as a day for women.
