Castillo de Castellar, Spain

The old village of Castellar de la Frontera is perched high on a hilltop in the province of Cadiz, with commanding views over the Guadarranque reservoir. The history of the village goes back to prehistoric times and the Bronze Age, after which the place became a medieval fortress. The prehistoric presence is still evident in the many caves around the area, where enthusiasts can see the wonderful cave drawings as proof of its heritage. It played an important role in the wars between the Spanish and the Muslims. 

Castle of Castellar is a fortress castle of the thirteenth century, located in Castellar de la Frontera. It is located on a mountain of the Natural Park of Alcornocales. Entering the Castle Fortress of Castellar de la Frontera (Historical Artistic Monument since 1963) is to immerse yourself in a past of Islamic smells, in a wall of whiteness and living nature. Going through its zigzag streets, decorated with pots and flower beds is to be found again with the history and with the oldest traditions of Andalusia.

Castellar de la Frontera sits in the heart of the Comarca del Campo de Gibraltar, in the south-east of the Province of Cadiz. A little over a kilometer away you will find Castellar Nuevo, a young and modern town with lucid balconies, flower gardens and white facades. The old Castellar, built on a rocky promontory, keeps its historic quarter inside a 13th-century Arab castle at 248m. Of altitude.
